Cognitive Development
The preschool years are an important and vibrant time for learning. Children now
know they are separate and independent beings, so they want to experience and do
things for themselves. Preschoolers learn best by "doing". Your
preschooler may seem happy just watching the same cartoons over and over or drawing
the same stick person every time he/she puts a crayon to paper. However, children need variety in their activities - both indoors, outdoors, and
increasingly with other children. Preschoolers also need quiet time to learn how
to entertain themselves and play on their own. Our curriculum focuses on memory, reasoning, problem solving, and symbolic thought. You will see growth in your preschooler's language skills and
abilities. Along with learning new words, preschoolers will learn colors,
shapes, and some basic abstract concepts that will help them begin to understand the world around them better.

Milestones
Understanding these milestones help us know what kinds of learning experiences to plan in our classrooms. Based on this knowledge of development, we can plan activities that are challenging but achievable for individual children. Remember, milestones are markers that let us know a child is growing in a healthy way. These markers are not thresholds or "tests" that a child must pass. Milestones are a tool we use to help monitor healthy development. Sometimes, however, children do not reach milestones at the expected time. It is important to remember that each child is different. Not every child meets every milestone at expected times.
